Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, "Nahargarh" means Abode of Tigers. Along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, it formed a defensive ring around Jaipur. Nahargarh Fort was originally constructed for defence, but was rarely used in wars. A fascinating story is linked to Rathore prince Nahar Singh Bhomiya, whose spirit was believed to haunt the site. To pacify him, a temple was built in his name inside the fort. Later, Sawai Madho Singh constructed Madhavendra Bhawan, a palace with mural-decorated halls and suites for the king and his queens.
