Situated at the foot of Moti Dungri Fort in Jaipur, Moti Dungri Ganesh Ji Temple is one of the most sacred and popular temples in the city. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the destroyer of obstacles and the god of beginnings, this temple is a center of immense devotion among locals and tourists. Built in the early 18th century, this temple is considered a spiritual heritage of Jaipur due to its religious belief, unique architecture and easily accessible location.
This temple was built in the year 1761 by the then Prime Minister of Jaipur, Seth Jairam Paliwal, during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I. The idol of Lord Ganesha enshrined here is believed to be more than 500 years old, which was brought from Gujarat by bullock cart. Since then, Moti Dungri Ganesh Ji is worshipped first before every auspicious work and new beginning in Jaipur.
The temple is built in Nagara style architecture, with beautiful stone carvings and lattice work. It has three domes, which symbolize the religious unity of India (Hindu, Muslim and Christian). The main idol of Lord Ganesha is in a reclining posture with the trunk bent towards the right, which is considered extremely auspicious and rare. The temple is located at the foot of Moti Dungri Fort, which resembles a Scottish fort (though the fort is closed to the general public).
The best time to visit Moti Dungri Ganesh Ji Temple is from October to March. The atmosphere of the temple is very grand on Wednesdays and Ganesh Chaturthi. The evening time gives a special experience with aarti and illumination.
