Isarlat (Sargasuli Tower) – Victory Pillar of Jaipur

Rising high in the hustle and bustle of Jaipur’s old city, Isarlat, also known as Sargasuli (meaning: “path to heaven”), is a historic victory pillar that offers a panoramic view of the Pink City. Built by Maharaja Ishwari Singh in 1749, this seven-storey tower was constructed to commemorate his victory in the Battle of Rajmahal over his brother Madho Singh. Located near the Tripolia Gate, this architectural masterpiece is still considered a hidden gem among the heritage sites of Jaipur.

Historical Significance

  • Isarlat was built by Maharaja Ishwari Singh, son of Jaipur’s founder Sawai Jai Singh II, to mark his military victories and legitimate claim to the throne.
  • This tower not only symbolised victory but also served as a watch tower to monitor the growing city in the 18th century.

  • A seven-storey octagonal tower about 140 ft (42 m) high.
  • Built with yellow sandstone and lime plaster, which matches the architectural style of Jaipur.
  • Narrow winding staircase to reach the top (no lift).

  • The topmost floor offers a 360° view of the Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and City Palace.
