Located near Hathma village in the Thar Desert, around 35–43 km from Barmer city, Kiradu Temples is a group of five ancient temples. Built in the 11th–12th centuries, these temples are often known as the “Khajuraho of Rajasthan”. Constructed in marble and sandstone, they represent the Maru Gurjar architectural style with intricate carvings of deities, dancers and warriors.
The Kiradu Temples were constructed by the subordinate rulers of the Solanki (Chalukya) dynasty. Inscriptions dating from 1153–1178 AD confirm their historical roots. According to local legends, the site was abandoned after a curse by a local saint, giving it an air of mystery and silence.
The main temple, Someshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the most preserved among all. The octagonal mandapam, beautifully carved pillars and sculptures of gods and goddesses make it a masterpiece. Other temples in the complex also showcase stunning artwork of apsaras, dishapalas and scenes from ancient mythology. An old stepwell and several ruins stand nearby, representing the architectural glory of that era.
