Located in the heart of Ajmer city, Akbari Fort and Museum is a wonderful amalgamation of Mughal architecture, Rajput history and cultural heritage. This fort was once the residence of Mughal prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir). Today, this historical site is famous as the Ajmer Government Museum, where innumerable artefacts and relics related to the glorious past of Rajasthan are preserved.
Built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, this fort reminds us of the era when Ajmer was the main centre of political and military activities. Today, it is a major attraction of Ajmer for history lovers, researchers and tourists.
Akbar built this fort in 1570 AD as a military base and palace to keep an eye on the Rajput territories. It was from here that Emperor Jahangir issued a royal decree allowing the British East India Company to trade in India, which started colonial influence in the subcontinent.
Over time, the fort was converted into a museum during British rule and is currently being preserved and showcased by the Government of Rajasthan, bringing the royal and cultural heritage of the region to the general public.
The Ajmer Government Museum, located within the fort, is divided into four major sections:
